Alexander III of Macedon, commonly known as Alexander the Great. He was a king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. He was born in Pella in 356 BC and succeeded his father Philip II to the throne at the age of 20. He spent most of his ruling years on an original military campaign through western Asia and northeast Africa, and by the age of thirty, he had created one of the greatest empires of the ancient world, stretching from Greece to northwestern India. He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered one of history's most successful military commanders.
Why is Alexender's conquer is the most significant phase in Indian history?
Alexander was victorious in all the battles. Soon he conquered Asia Minor, Syria, Egypt, and Persia in 331 BC. He wanted to conquer India, which was known as the land of milk and honey.
In 327 BC, Alexander invaded India, after crossing the river Indus.
He fought and defeated King Porus of the Jhelum territory.
Alexender was highly impressed by the courage of King Porus, and he decided to return the seized kingdom to him.
Why is Alexender's conquer is the most significant phase in Indian history?
Well, the answer is utterly political. The invasion noticed political unity among the battling state.
The rise of the first emperor of Bharata
The invasion led to the rise of the Indian empire like Mauryan. It is said to be a period when chronology became inevitable. It was a period when politics, art, trade and economics raised India to a glorious height. It was a period of the alliance of the nations which lay as fragmented realms. Moreover, Indian contact with the outside world was built effectively during this phase.
After, the death of Alexander gave Chandragupta Maurya an opportunity to free the countries from the yoke of the Greeks, and thus hold the areas of Punjab and Sindh.
According to various historical legends, Chanakya the adviser of Maurya was insulted by the Dhana Nanda, the ruler of Magadha.
Chanakya swore to destroy the whole kingdom.
In order to take vengeance from the king Nanda, he used his intelligence and besides with Chandragupta gathered many young men from across the Magadha and other territories.
Chandragupta's army even succeeded to create an atmosphere of civil war in the kingdom. Which managed to the death of the heir to the throne.
Finally, Nanda surrendered and gave power to the Chandragupta and went into exile.
Chandragupta, who ruled from 324 to 301 BC, thus, earned the title of saviour and the first emperor of Bharata.
