The festival of Raksha Bandhan originated centuries before. There are several stories related to the celebration of this special festival. Most of the stories related to Hindu mythology:

The bond of Draupadi and The Lord Krishna

Story related to the Mahabharata.

Draupadi, wife of the Pandavas had torn the corner of her sari to prevent Lord Krishna's wrist from bleeding. Thus, a bond, that of brother and sister formed between them, and he swore to protect her.

Sachi's holy thread for her husband Lord Indra

Story related to the ancient legend of Bhavishya Purana.

Once upon a time, there was a fierce battle between gods and demons. Lord Indra - the god of rain and thunderbolts, regent of the heavens, and guardian of the east. he was fighting the battle on the side of Gods were having a hard stand from the powerful demon King, Bali. The war continued for a long time and did not come on a conclusive end. Watching this, Indra's wife Sachi prayed to the Lord Vishnu who gave her a holy bracelet. Sachi tied the holy bracelet around her husband wrist. Lord Indra who ultimately defeated the demons and recovered the Amaravati.  Nowadays, those holy threads were not limited to brother-sister relationships.

According to the legends, Lord Ganesha had two sons who asked him to bring a sister so she could tie rakhi to them. Ganesha then created Santoshi Maa who tied rakhi to his sons.
